The Conference
Constitutionalism in a new key?
Cosmopolitan, pluralist and public reason-oriented
Welcome to the international conference.

January 28th, 2011 at the Humboldt University of Berlin, Senate Hall "Senatssaal"
January 29th. 2011, at the WZB, Conference Room A 300

This conference seeks to rethink some basic issues of constitutional theory in light of contemporary challenges, that might have been sidelined or even obscured by the generally statist focus of traditional constitutional theory.
Among the questions that will be examined are: Can a constituent power, which is exclusively national, be the ground for the constitutions claim to legitimate authority? How can constitutional theory contribute to a normative understanding of borders? How is the relationship between national and international law to be conceived within constitutional theory? If constitutionalism is more than legalization, under which conditions is it reasonable and what are the practical consequences in connection with the European Union or the UN to speak of "constitutionalism beyond the state"?

Guests are very welcome! There are no registration fees for guests!

Organized by Mattias Kumm, Research Professor "Rule of Law in the Age of Globalization", Rule of Law Center of Social Science Research Center Berlin.
